Appearance: Spotted hyenas have a robust build with powerful forequarters and a sloping back. They have a distinctive coat pattern characterized by dark spots scattered across a sandy or light brown fur. The spots are more prominent on the back and fade towards the belly. Spotted hyenas have a large head with a blunt muzzle, rounded ears, and a short, bushy tail. They also have strong jaws with powerful teeth adapted for crushing bones.

Size: Spotted hyenas are the largest species of hyena, typically weighing between 45 to 70 kilograms (100 to 155 pounds) and standing around 70 to 90 centimeters (28 to 35 inches) tall at the shoulder. They can measure between 1.1 to 1.5 meters (3.6 to 4.9 feet) in length, not including the tail, which adds an additional 25 to 35 centimeters (10 to 14 inches).

Habitat: Spotted hyenas inhabit a wide range of habitats across sub-Saharan Africa, including savannas, grasslands, woodlands, and semi-arid areas. They are adaptable animals and can thrive in diverse environments, from open plains to dense vegetation. Spotted hyenas are often found near water sources such as rivers, lakes, and waterholes, where they can hunt for prey and scavenge for food.

Behavior: Spotted hyenas are primarily nocturnal, being most active during the night when temperatures are cooler. They are highly social animals and live in large clans consisting of multiple individuals, usually led by a dominant female known as the matriarch. Spotted hyenas are skilled hunters and scavengers, capable of taking down large prey such as wildebeest, zebras, and even young elephants. They are also known for their powerful jaws and ability to crush bones, allowing them to access nutrient-rich marrow and carcasses left behind by other predators.

Diet: Spotted hyenas are opportunistic feeders and have a varied diet that includes small mammals, birds, insects, carrion, and even fruits and vegetables. They are skilled hunters and often work together as a coordinated group to bring down larger prey. Spotted hyenas are also efficient scavengers and will readily consume carcasses left behind by other predators, often using their powerful jaws and sharp teeth to access hard-to-reach parts of the carcass.

Reproduction: Breeding among spotted hyenas typically occurs throughout the year, although peak mating seasons may vary depending on environmental conditions. After a gestation period of around 90 to 110 days, females give birth to a litter of one to four cubs, although two cubs is more common. The cubs are born with soft, woolly fur and open eyes, and they are able to stand and walk shortly after birth. They are nursed by their mother for several months before being introduced to solid food.
