Appearance: Burchell’s zebras are known for their striking black and white striped coats, which are unique to each individual, similar to human fingerprints. The stripes run horizontally across the body and extend down the legs, creating a distinctive pattern. The background color of the coat can range from white to a creamy beige, while the stripes are typically black. They have a short, erect mane along the neck and a tuft of hair at the tip of the tail. Their large, round ears are lined with black on the outer edges.

Size: Burchell’s zebras are medium-sized equids, with adults typically standing around 1.2 to 1.4 meters (4 to 4.5 feet) tall at the shoulder. They can measure around 2.1 to 2.5 meters (7 to 8.2 feet) in length from the head to the base of the tail. Burchell’s zebras can weigh between 220 to 385 kilograms (485 to 850 pounds), with males being slightly larger and heavier than females.

Habitat: Burchell’s zebras inhabit a variety of habitats, including grasslands, savannas, woodlands, and open plains. They are highly adaptable and can be found in both arid and more humid environments. Burchell’s zebras are commonly found in areas with access to water sources such as rivers, streams, and waterholes.

Behavior: Burchell’s zebras are social animals and are often found in small to large herds consisting of several individuals, although they may also form temporary associations with other species such as wildebeests and antelopes. They communicate through vocalizations, body language, and scent marking. Burchell’s zebras are known for their agility and speed, which they use to evade predators such as lions and hyenas.

Diet: Burchell’s zebras are herbivores, feeding primarily on grasses and other vegetation. They are selective grazers and will feed on a variety of grass species depending on availability and nutritional content. Burchell’s zebras have specialized digestive systems that allow them to extract nutrients from fibrous plant material.
